>From the "this is cool" department, courtesy of Edupage: PALMPILOTS OFFER DIRECT-DIAL SHOPPING Britain's Safeway supermarkets (which are no longer affiliated with the U.S. Safeway stores) are handing shoppers personalized shopping lists on PalmPilot handheld computers, offering the ease of shopping online without going on the Web. "Our customers don't want to log on (to the Web) every time and go through catalogues of 25,000 products... We're skipping Web shopping altogether. Our research has found that our customers don't have PCs," says a Safeway spokeswoman. The PalmPilots have been specially modified to incorporate a miniature barcode scanner, allowing shoppers to restock their kitchen pantries by scanning the barcode labels on the packages of products they need to replace.
