from nua surveys: World Bank: Developing World Not Ready For Y2K The majority of developing countries are unprepared for the Millenium Bug and its repercussions, according to the World Bank. In a survey of 139 developing countries, the World Bank found that to date, little to no action has been taken in the developing world to address the problem. Only 54 percent of countries surveyed have adopted a Y2K policy. 38 percent have appointed a Y2K coordinator but only 21 percent have taken concrete action to counter the problem. Most disturbingly, while one third of countries said they were aware of the problem and its implications, there were no plans to address the issue. It is mistakenly thought that developing countries are less at risk from Y2K problem, according to the World Bank. In contrast, the economies of these countries are more at risk, dependent on fewer, older systems. The areas that require immediate action are power generation and tramission, national financial sectors, national communications, transport, healthcare and education, and food and fuel distribution. The World Bank warns that the collapse of developing countries as a result of the Millenium Bug will also have serious implications for the global economy. <http://www.worldbank.org/html/extdr/extme/2078.htm> > Kathy E.
