Gentry -- MSIE supports stuff that's non-standard (ie, not HTML 4.0).
*Neither* browser properly supports CSS, which is the only part of HTML
that is supposed to control "appearance" of the document!
I guess I have little sympathy for those who want to control "appearance"
-- as it still varies depending on the output device. Just the simple fact
that MS products render fonts about 30% larger than their "point size"
would suggest means a Mac and a PC page will NOT look the same. Unless you
spec your fonts in pixels.
I do like MSIE 4.x for the Mac because it has preferences on the top bar --
and I can download images with "apple+i" (when they're turned off). But
when images are "off" in MSIE 4.x for the Mac -- they're "off" even if they
are in the Cache! This is *stupid.* Now, I don't know which browser is
doing it "right" -- ie, per W3C spec -- but in this case I prefer
Netscape's implementation.
MSIE 4.x for the Mac also lets you turn frames "off" (a la Opera) -- which
I like. We got into a very long discussion on CHI-WEB about this feature --
which some people feeling strongly that you shouldn't let the user "turn
off" anything that is standard W3C HTML. <shrug> My response is, 'if the
pages are coded to W3C spec, people will see them anyway.'
