Barry,
DSL requires a special box (ours is called a Copper Rocket) that goes
between your hub/machine and the wall. Also, I believe that DSL speeds can
run anywhere from ISDN to T-1 depending on how much you pay (sometimes the
upload and download speeds vary, too). We're paying several hundred a month
(the service is metered) but often get speeds up to 45K (vs. 3K for a
modem), plus the fact that the DSL connection is always on and can be
shared among all the computers on our network. You used to have to pay well
over a thousand a month for a fractional T-1 (plus the installation of a
special line) to get this kind of performance.
For what it's worth, the tech support at Brainstorm has been outstanding.
Northpoint and PacBell are another story (the other day Northpoint switched
us with someone else in its database thus rendering both DSL lines
inoperative). I've been told that Northpoint is better than Covad, but
based on what we've seen thus far with Northpoint that may not be saying much.
