So that "out of date" "spam" rumor about a "phone tax" was
mis-stated, not mistaken.
I am connected to the net nearly 24 hours, seven days a week. Like
many others, I am trying to build a business on the web; but even more,
use the web for research on any idea that crosses my mind. If rates go
up, thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of potential new businesses
and ideas will be swept by the wayside, depriving America and the world of
things most of us can not even imagine.
For the lucky ones, cable modems may help. For the unlucky ones,
like my relatives in back woods New England, back groves Florida, and the
Midwest, they will end up dropping off the net and losing the benefits of
having a library card to the largest collection of human thought that ever
was. And we, of their opinions and ideas.
Nations that regulate thought... hinder not only their citizens, but
destroy value they might eventually see tax dollars from. Thought is made
of other thoughts, echoing in the caverns of the mind, amplified by human
spirit. As totalitarian states have showed this world over and over
again, nothing renders a nation more backwards, powerless, and
impoverished, than the regulation of thought. And nothing regulates
thought as much as the regulation of communications.
