Linux is the winning horse. Development, usenet and email support,
hardcopy documentation, even vendor support nowadays are all more
intense for Linux. Besides, the PC platform is Linux's mainstream,
whereas I had never even heard of Solaris for PC until your mail.

For development purposes I'd recommend Debian Linux
