The Communications Decency Act of 1996 contains a "safe harbor" for ISPs with
respect to online defamation. The safe harbor is a legislative overruling of
the Stratton Oakmont v. Prodigy case.
The act provides that no ISP will be held to be a publisher, and therefore,
not vicariously liable for defamation. There are caveats, however and you
should seek legal counsel in your jurisdiction.
