Tamra and I car-pooled, my being on her way to the show. We arrived
in San Jose early; but spent what seems to have been well over half an
hour looking for a place to park. All the usual show related places were
full! I ran into the entry hall at about five minutes past twelve,
muttering "web consultants?" to any group of people standing around. Too
late!
For those not going, the show was fairly small as conventions go,
less than half the usual exhibit hall. But for Linux, that is huge! IBM,
HP, Sybase, and a number of other major players had large booths, as did
several book vendors. Red Hat, Caldera, and Turbo Linux had fairly large
looking booths, though not as large as IBM; but Debian, Slackware, and a
number of lesser known distributions were also represented, some handing
out free Linux CD's.
Some of the lesser vendors had clear presentations; but there were
quite a few who did not seem to have a clear concept of how to present
what the were all about to the casual attendee. It is always hard to tell
if these are true geniuses with fantastic products, or just people with
fantasies.
The show floor was packed! There is hope that next year's show will
be larger.
I have been impressed by Turbo Linux's superior ability to detect
notebook hardware and better installation interface in their 2.0 release
vs Red Hat's 5.2. (Like most, they use Red Hat's RPM, but build upon it.)
I bought Turbo Linux 3.0.1 for $15.
We covered the exhibits in what seemed to be less time than we had
spent finding a parking space... (though it was probably at least twice
the time,) and left by about two or two fifteen.
