The way this works is that you install Perl and then the DBI module and then a
DBD module specific to your chosen database (mySQL and mSQL are two popular
free UNIX relational databases). Getting all this stuff installed and working
can be difficult (at least for someone who isn't a full-time UNIX sysadmin),
but after that it works fairly well (albeit a little sluggishly).
PHP seems to be popular these days (http://www.php3.org/) although I
haven't had
a chance to try it (sounds similar to ASP or Cold Fusion in the way it works).
