Your fax story reminded me of talking with the marketing director for the
Oregon Shakepeare Festival here in Oregon about doing their Web site. I
asked her what their stipulation of "no interactivity" meant.She replied
that they didn't want to accept e-mail. Naturally, I replied that e-mail is
a must. And why wouldn't they want it? Because they were afraid that someone
might hack into their reservations system. I tried my best to explain how
their web site would actually be on a completely separate server, and that
they would only need to log on for a few minutes a day to download e-mail.
And could even do that from a separate little cheapie Mac, perhaps one of
the Macs in their art department. No dice, she wouldn't hear of it.
We didn't get the job anyway. They said our bid of $5000 was "outrageous."
We later learned that they had a $3500 grant to do their Web site and that's
what their budget was. And for that, they sent out RFP's to some 20 design
firms all over Oregon and we spent two weeks collaborating on a proposal
with our ISP. They ended up having one of their print freelancers do their
site even though he'd never done a Web site before, "because he already has
our logos on his computer." That was 3 or 4 years ago and last time I
checked (which was some time ago) they still didn't have e-mail, even though
they're southern Oregon's largest tourist attraction, bringing some 1/2
million visitors to Ashland ever summer.
OSF is probably the largest business in Ashland, so I doubt anyone here is
going to be ready to hear that Web sites start at $5000.
