well, in a sense, you have.. your mail client has polled the server for
delivery information, found that there was a problem, and alerted you to
the fact.
there's really no other way to find out the status of an address, because
email systems are designed to cache messages, forward them, and use
alternate delivery paths before reporting an error. in many cases, the
server you send the message to is just a relay host, which will forward the
message to the final destination. often, that final destination is
deliberately kept hidden, for purposes of network security or flexibility.
to compound the problem, mailservers usually store messages in a timed
queue for delivery. there's no way to guarantee an instant response from
the final mail host as regards the state of the account. even if there
were, it wouldn't do you any good.. the state of the account can change
completely between the moment you made the status request and the moment
you try to deliver the 'real' message.
about all you can do is send something to the target address, and wait for
a bounce message. if there were anything more effective out there, you
can rest assured that the spammers would be using it to stalk people.
