Luc,

Is it? I think the problem is much more that there are so many different goals people try to achive. It makes all the difference in the world if you for example want to setup a system just for one domain or for (multiple) virtual domains. Most distros just aren't prepared for that from what I know, i.e. they often work from the assumption that there is *one* user auth database that is built into the system and that this should be used.
SASL offers tons of options and if you're doing this for the first time, you usually don't know yet what it is that you're trying to achieve. Any in my opinion there is very little good documentation on SASL "for the rest of us". I think I have understood all this know after working intensively with it for 2-3 years, but I remember how I was trying to master all this. I read lot's of HOWTOs and did not understand a single word.

But this is how the world is.

Which HOWTO do you mean exactly? Where is the SGML?

Andy,
So I was thinking maybe i should write a troubleshooting guide for Fedora Core 3? There are enough how tos but if something goes wrong where do you look?
I wonder why but a lot of people face the problem you had. Including myself
when I set up web-cyradm for the first time.
The problem is that cyrus-sasl is very tricky to handle. And finally there are a lot (maybe too much) Layers of Software involved.
I think the problem is that there are a lot of howtows, but most often the
one you would need isn't there. Meaning certain information that is of
general interest might be in the SuSE Linux HOWTO which you will probably
not read if you run RedHat.
And thats a problem of the distributors that they dont take much care about interoperability
BTW: I installed SuSE 9.3 and guess what? Postfix still commes without MySQL and/or PostgreSQL
Also most of the HOWTOs are "how to set up a whole mail system with this and
that and cyrus" and web-cyradm comes only as the very last such as "know
that we have a working mail server, how about a web frontend".
I once started some specific web-cyram howto. I think I had posted it.
Search the archives. I need to say I that feedback from the community was
not very encouraging. The subject of my posting was something like "how
about some documenation". It was meant with a smile, but not everyone
understood it. Ok, I should have used a smily ;-))
I would be against an off-site forum; i think anything that belongs to
web-cyradm should be kept together. So dicussions belong on the mailing list
(which has a searchable archive @ www.mail-archive.com now, archiving mails
since earlier this month) and docu (inlcuding a potential FAQ,
troubleshooting guide or setup howto) belong on the site.
I agree, a Forum is not that handy like a mailinglist, and I dont like this webforums
Maybe I should rework the HOWTO to cover more common distributions. If people will compile the stuff all by them self, then lesser problems are expected.
I understand Luc runs a CMS. So it should not be too much of a problem if he
would allow some selected people (such as you) to update specific documents
on the site (such as a troubleshooting guide or a FAQ).
For usernotes I probably going to set up a mediawiki.
For FAQs: I can create usernames and passwords for the typo3 CMS. With the upcomming typo3 3.8.0 it will be possible to restrict editing to a certain language, so the page can also be easely translated to other langauges...
This will make sure that the info is actually found by people who need it.
Of course if will need to be maintained.
One of my outstanding tasks is to enhance the current HOWTO with some Pitfalls chapters.
If someone would like to help, grab the SGML :-)
rgds and thanks
