The passwords are not stored in MySQL. If you have web-cyradm working sasl 
checks against the database.

Two ideas to search for the problem:

1) Check in the plugin config if you really use the correct database mail and 
the correct fields.
2) May the user you are testing is also a unix user? Comment the lines 
in /etc/pam.d/imap 
#auth sufficient pam_unix_auth.so
