I see now that the post I was looking at that the thumbnail was a field they had in their table. It looks like if I want a thumbnail, I would need to make some changes in the upload code that takes a copy of item.image, processes it and then puts that copy/thumbnail in to the db. So there are two files in the db for each pic.
