Well, the model I had in mind was the media library in Wordpress. There's a button I can press beside the textarea. It pops up a modal window displaying thumbnails of my uploaded media files. I click on the file I want to insert, and the necessary markup (including filename) is pasted into my textarea. If we wanted to get fancy one could add a form to set options like image size, alt text and title, etc. but that wouldn't be necessary for my purposes.
