it's just another "great promises" project abandoned because the community 
lacks support. Having to do such a thing for 5 interested users is never 
going to be fascinating enough to maintain it actively.

BTW, I really don't see the point of the post....... you can place the 
gluon folder wherever you like (or insert into the sys.path) and use 

from gluon.dal import DAL, Field 

without too many worries. It's one of the most decoupled modules in web2py 
already (except of course for needed "drivers" that you need to connect to 
your preferred backend).

The sad truth is that web2py has lots of demanding users and a couple 
dozens active contributors, and - at least - up until now, that couple 
dozen already tried to get "public" interest going and never got any 
response **even** for the "should be interested demanding users"....

not even testing the code or reviewing the documentation 
Slowly, I just lost the point of wasting hours in supporting something that 
I don't need just to make a couple users happy. That being said, if it's 
something that at least I need, I always contributed back into web2py the 
new features, and I'll probably continue this way.
