you must set it on the dict for each table.
e.g.
*models/db.py*
db.define_table('category',
Field('name'),
format = '%(name)s')
db.define_table('product',
Field('name'),
Field('category', 'reference category'),
format = '%(name)s')
*controllers/default.py*
def category():
grid = SQLFORM.smartgrid(db.category, orderby = dict(category =
~db.category.name, product = db.product.name) )
return locals()
