Thanks, I solved it with:
query = (db.rates.item_id==request.args(0)) &
~(db.rates.user_id==auth.user.id)
results = db(query).select(db.rates.user_id,
orderby=~db.rates.clicks)
maxrating = results[0].user_id
i can now use maxrating for my query.
