A really really quick suggestions that is temp workaround:

See if the issue persists when running Ubuntu 11.04 server edition. If
necessary, in 11.04 desktop, install virtualbox and then setup a VM
with Ubuntu 11.04 server edition.

Now can more experienced pros give better solutions please.
