Your findings probably led to hg commit #2119 which has the commit comment "possible __builtin__ fix for jython, thanks Chris Clark". This raised some hopes, but the current hg tip still doesn't work on Jython yet (at least for me). It needs more love still. Hopefully the situation will improve soon.
