FYI, grid now sets cacheable=True when doing selects: http://code.google.com/p/web2py/source/detail?r=6596fb84ed0fb49fa19879f80de5fb30ee4d0403. Still no caching option, though (I guess you can cache the output of the grid itself, though, which is probably better because it avoids all the processing of the grid function).
