I don’t know why rejection from Chrome and Firefox makes you skeptical.
Both are used to be very conservative to adopt new image formats.
Firefox rejected webp, jxr, jpeg2000. and Chromium did jxr, jpeg2000 and also 
apng.
Do we need to reject webp since FF and IE doesn’t support it in same manner? I 
think that’s not fair.
As KaL said, I think supporting any format others don’t could be a charming 
point for WebKitGTK+.
