Yes, hiring a designer to make it Awesome (while keeping in line with 
cleanliness and functionality) is the best idea.

Besides that I suggest:

  * provide better spacing
  * center the page
  * choose better fonts
  * get a real memorable logo
  * move menu links of lesser importance to the page bottom
  * don't have a modal preferences form, just fields that can be changed

These just off the top of my head.
