Wow ..... ok, I am going to have to retrofit my Mac Pro with at least one boot volume on SSD .... and as long as we have svn repos, IMAP Mail and Time machine we should be fairly protected against the apparent SSD marginally-worse reliability ;-)

BTW, when I was researching the RAID stuff, I found an interesting article that recommended picking 4 different drive brands/models for your RAID array since if all drives are from the same brand/product/ batch, there is a higher likelihood of failure around the same time, especially if there was an inherent quality problem in that batch. They actually related a real story of a company that, IIRC, had bought 200 drives from IBM for RAIDs and they lost complete RAID volumes due to all the drives failing at the same time due to some quality defect in that batch!

I just tested identical Hudson builds between my MacBook Pro with a SSD and an Intel MacMini with a HDD.

Build Time(8 applications with WO and WOnder fully embedded):
HHD: 1 hour, 18 minutes
SSD: 7 minutes.

This job copies ~60,000 files total and creates split-install tars.

one thing I will say about ssd is that it's the #1 biggest bang for the buck you can buy ... there's no processor bump, hd speed increase, or memory increase you can spend your money on that will give you anywhere near the equivalent end-user benefit as ssd. i can't imagine ever going back to platters.

a couple of seconds
"a baker's few"
officially, about 35 seconds from power button to in-using-ichat with my encrypted disk images mounted ... about 4-5 seconds from login window to typing in ichat with network connection.
