Hi,I am researching WO for use in an upcoming project.
Welcome.
Since I am new to this list, I do not have a feel for what is going on with WO or the WO Community.I would love to hear Good/Bad comments concerning the WO Development Environment. Any comparison to Ruby on Rails would be helpful, as well.
You are likely hear fairly biased views about WO around here given the name of the list. :-)
WebObjects Pros:1. Mature, stable, feature rich environment. In many areas unsurpassed by *any* other web development tool or framework. 2. Strong OO architecture. Usually makes doing the "right thing" (eg. MVC) the "easiest thing" 3. Pure Java - despite your feelings about the language itself, being able to tap into the myriad of Java class libraries out there is invaluable.
4. Direct to X technologies - definitely best of breed. 5. Free to develop, free? to deploy (on OSX at least) 6. Large selection of database options.7. As Cocoa is to desktop application development, WO is web apps. A seasoned WebObjects developer can do an amazing amount very quickly with very little code.
8. ProjectWONDER WebObjects Cons:1. Mature and stable could be viewed as stagnant. Feature richness comes with a corresponding steepness of learning curve (TANSTAAFL).
2. Shrinking list of development options 3. Not open source4. Some are concerned about Apples commitment to the platform. (I have to say I am not one of them.)
Is it worth investing one's valuable time
That is your decision to make but I think so.
Or has it been superseded by new, improved technologies?
Are there competitors? Yes definitely. Has it been "superseded" by any of them? In my view, no.
Rails is an interesting contender, and I'm glad to see a new well designed framework on the field. But it is still very young and has a long way to go before it equals the richness of WO.
