The issue that people keep having isn't a technical one, it's a legal
one, because Apple won't say a word about it. My interpretation has
been that yes, you are allowed to deploy on any platform with no
license cost. The WO team has said that was their "intention" in the
way the WO 5.3 license was written, but they have declined to give an
actual legal yes/no on the matter, since they are not themselves
lawyers, and suggest that you contact your own lawyer for a legal
interpretation of the license... That having been said, the WO team
does not seem to care, so I don't think you're going to have anyone
running you down for doing it. Just pull the key out of the framework
on an OS X machine.

I'm not certain why everyone's so squirrelly about giving straight
answers on this one, but that's perhaps just part of the general
Apple corporate culture. I've gotten from several sources inside
Apple that it's cool to go ahead and deploy anywhere you like.
(n'est-ce pas?)
I think that the difficulty people have with this comes from
varying meanings of the word "support".
People keep asking if deployment on other platforms is "supported".
If support means that Apple is required to answer even one question
you might have about deploying on Linux, the answer will probably
be no.
Apple has not been hostile to seeing WO become useful on other
platforms. They have been saying in various public fora that they
want to interoperate with, for example, ant. If things are more
compatible with ant, does this mean that use on other platforms is
easier or harder? My guess is that it gets easier.
Look at the ant project types that the Java group has been putting
out. Are they "supported" on Windows? Is this even a sensible or
necessary question?
There is a customer base for which the definition of "support" is
important. If you are going to be subject to Sarbanes-Oxley
auditing and you have to document the "pedigree" and "right to use"
of every single piece of your tool chain, then you should probably
decide if Apple's license is acceptable to you. Perhaps you are in
a federally-funded organization, or your shareholders are suing
your management. But those people have lawyers that work for them
who give them the answer to their questions.
Do you worry about Apple's interpretation of "support" in this
context? Do you have a lawyer on staff that you can direct the
question to? If not, maybe that should tell you something.
As for me, if I want to get a "no" answer to any question, I ask a
lawyer. Otherwise, I do code.

I have been trying to figure out what if any licensing
requirements are in place for WebObjects 5.3 applications
deployed out as servlets on non OSX platforms. I assume that OSX
platforms (at least OSX Server) have a valid WebObjects license
on them.
The Apple software licensing site discussion ends at 5.2 (when
WebObjects was embedded in with Xcode). I placed a call to the
Apple Software Licensing group in Dallas and they were not very
helpful at all. They told me to look at the Developer.apple.com
site which contained no more information.
Is it safe to assume that any app developed with Xcode (or
Eclipse using WOLips) is free from license fees? Most of our
deployments are on non OSX platforms including (Windows, Linux,
and Solaris).
I need some information ASAP. Thanks in advance.
