It seems like no matter what I will have to open up the jar and adjust the 
class file either via a recompile of the decompiled java file or by using 
javaassist.

You generally wouldn't integrate it into your application for what you are 
trying to do. You would use it offline as part of the build/deployment 
process.

the existing component class with a new one or rename the existing class 
(you can do this using javaassist) and subclass it with a new class of the 
same name to achieve what you want to do.

No, it is just done by name and visibility.
