In our experience, it is very likely that your Fibre Channel hardware itself
will fail long before one of the machines that rely on them. Seriously. We had
so many RAID systems say goodbye, be it based on Firewire or FC...

What we finally arrived on is a serious NAS storage, like a NetApp FAS, plus
multiple cheaper NAS RAIDs for backups and bulk storage. Using the network for
file system access has the advantage of not introducing another channel that
can bring your systems into failure. If your machines run fine on the network
but the FC adapters or the FC switch fails, you're down. If the network fails,
you're down with your service anyway. Plus, all machines can have the same file
systems mounted simultaneously.
