WO in its binary form miraculously survived Java evolution for so many years. Not knowing the details of Java 9, I can't say what the next workaround will be, but I know there will be one :)
But seriously, you should probably start looking at Apache Cayenne or other alternatives. You may check my presentations from WOWODC last year on what it takes to get there (TL;DR - no silver bullet, but a reasonable migration path).
