I saw Robert Langer who is the Director of Dell.com on New York New Media
Association (NYNMA) panel about building back-end ecommerce systems. It
kind of funny because a) he lied and said that they had originally built the
store on Microsoft Commerce Server, when in fact they had originally built
it with WebObjects before Commerce Server even existed and b) he said that
they the run the store on 250+ Intel boxes. Of course, as he mentioned,
Dell gets a "good price" on Intel boxes. Fortunately someone else on the
panel pointed out that his site gets the same results for much less money
using a fraction of that number of Sun boxes.
