All,
I'd like to start by apologizing for the way the recent updates on
the front page of opensolaris.org/os with respect to the call out boxes
occurred. I'll take full responsibility. Derek, Michelle and Bonnie
are just doing what's requested by executive management, so please feel
free to direct your comments to me instead of them.
Next, I'd like to make a proposal for how the front page of the web
site is managed. My first request is that we have community generated
content on the home page. I'd like to feature different communities,
projects, user groups, or partners that are doing interesting things in
and with OpenSolaris. I'd like to ask the Website Community Group to
work out how this can be done. Secondly, I'd like to request that Sun
be offered some space that would be clearly marked as "Sponsor
Information" or some other title on the right side for use in
OpenSolaris related product advertisements. Sun does invest heavily in
OpenSolaris infrastructure, engineering and marketing with both the
opensolaris.com (user) site and opensolaris.org/os (platform) site, and
Sun is requesting that it have a small percentage of space available to
use for its products which are related to OpenSolaris. Having this
advertising space be changed via committee would not be feasible (as
some content is not public until launch), but the layout and coloring
schemes can certainly be done such that it melds well with the new home
page.
Finally, I'd like to make sure you understand that in this proposal
in relation to the rest of the opensolaris.org site:
We will NOT be requesting space on any other project/community page,
this proposal is for opensolaris.org/os only;
We are requesting the right side call out boxes, but no other
content on the opensolaris.org/os page. If Sun were to ever request
additional space, it would have to be done and agreed upon by the
website CG.

I'd like to hear any comments you have on this proposal. I did run this
by the OGB today during their regular meeting.

Tim
