Hi Peter,
Thanks for your time to send this detailed feeback, some replies inline.

I've updated the home page draft on http://stage.opensolaris.org/os with
the results of the About pages updates and reviews. Requested updates to
all of the pages linked from the Overview section in the left navigation
bar are complete and the site map has been improved.
I think the site map is fundamentally broken.
Can you say more about this? Is it the 3-column layout? We suppressed
the lower-levels, so it loads faster and limits the links significantly,
but I think we all agree there is more work to do.
The final piece of work incorporates the splash page content into new
pages under opensolaris.org/os (for help, participate, and get) in
preparation for removal of the splash pages.
I'm having real problems with the homepage at this point. And the reason
is that we're duplicating function in 3 places:
- the toolbar at the top has some primary links
- the left navigation has an extended set of links
- the main page content is yet another set of primary links
I think that what we ought to do is eliminate the download/get/doc/participate
from he page content and merge them into the toolbar at the top of the page.
This is an interesting idea I haven't heard before, thanks for the
input. For search, having some of this content in the page is important,
but we definitely need to weigh that against duplication. I will try to
mock this up.
Putting them in the main page is just duplicate fluff.
(Talking about duplication: get and download is duplication; the participate
and project logos are the same.)
Please Note: I believe the Sponsored Links area is still 'under
construction',
I quite like it like that.
Also, I've temporarily hidden the ZFS text,
OK, so it was a bit of marketing, but it was at least real content. I
think we need
to make more of the "feature" aspect.
OK, thanks, this is good to know.
removed the callout
box for sending home page ideas,
Hopefully for good. It doesn't belong on the homepage.
After looking at it and receiving only one idea these last couple weeks,
I tend to agree.
and changed the country portals callout
box to a drop-down menu.
I'm less convinced by that. I'm not sure whether I just hate the whole idea
of a dropdown menu or whether the implementation misses the target.
(I would expect something like that - if implemented as a dropdown - to
be part of the primary navigation, not put in a sidebar.)
Right, this is certainly a hack right now, but the new infrastructure
should provide us with more built-in package for the localized content.
I'm also concerned about a drop-down for poor accessibility, so let's
see what others say. I'm hopeful for a solution to getting everything
above the fold somehow.
This brings the announcements nearer to the
top, let me know what you think of this approach.
They're still hiding below the fold, though. And I think something a bit more
radical is required to get them visible above the fold.
So, how about:
- dropping the blogs from the homepage entirely. Anyone interested can get to
the 'Blogs' and 'Planet' links in the left navigation.
- put the portal selection into the primary navigation. Maybe in the left bar.
(It normally would go at the top
- remove the IPS box. Maybe it should be the next feature splash.
- make the ZFS logo smaller, and put back some text to fill the top half (or
slightly more) of the main page area.
- put announcements/events as boxes where IPS and portal currently are.
- that brings the news items actually onto the page. At least, the
first one will be
and people might realize there's something else below the fold
Thanks again for your time, these are all very good ideas for
streamlining this page, much appreciated, keep 'em coming. Meantime,
I'll create more mockups on the website project.
-Michelle
