In addition to all those issues (which all still hold true with the  
latest draft), they're also completely a11y-unfriendly (thanks to the  
text embedded in the images, and the lack of any Alt tags).  And I  
don't think I've seen drop shadows like those on a website since the  
mid 1990's :)

Do we really not have a qualified web/graphic designer in our midst  
(either in Sun or the community) who can take the final responsibility  
for the visual design of this page at each update?  It's really too  
important a portal for the design to happen the way it currently does,  
IMHO.
