Hrm, I'm not sure they really work - I feel that the buttons are somehow section headers, and don't really apply to the rest of the navigation within that section (as marked by the horizontal separators). Perhaps some of the Discussions/Communities/Projects/... could be moved up into the subsites section (renamed), and then the buttons moved to where the previous icons were?
