Hello,
this weekend, Friedrich, Christian, Alex, Robert, Uwe and I met in
Munich for a admin meeting.
The main objective was to migrate our infrastructure to Ubuntu 12.04,
deployed with Puppet. Unfortunately, it turned out that migrating
everything into Puppet is a *very* tedious process, and we expect it
will take until the end of the year, requiring several weekends to work on.
The effort is very well worth it, because using a tool like Puppet helps
us to deploy, document and scale our systems in the way we need it, so
manually doing many things like now is not an option anymore, even if
this delays the whole migration.
Alex, Robert and I will work during the weekends whenever possible, and
keep you updated on the progress.
Christian has been heavily working on getting the new credit card
payment system integrated into Silverstripe, and I'll follow up with a
mail on this later, since we might even launch it today.
Besides, many other things have been worked on and been discussed. One
of the most contrary topic is how to document the infrastructure and who
is in charge. While right now, it's mostly me working on all the
documentation, this is clearly a bottleneck, also because our
infrastructure grows very quickly, requiring lots of new tools and
configuration options.
Good news were that Max joined us on Sunday. I met him during my talk at
Munich's IT-Brunch. He is interested in joining the admin team, and we
try to get him involved into writing so called Puppet manifests (i.e.
Puppet configuration files), to eliminate that bottleneck.
So much from the admin front for today,
Florian
