Hello,

aside the admin weekend, we also were talking about our donation button. In a nutshell, to make a provocative statement: I think our current donation page and button can use some improvement. ;-)

The more clicks people have, the more text they have to read, the more flying/blinking elements they see, the less likely they are to donate. On the other hand, the easier we make it for people to donate, the better it is.

My rough idea is to show the very same donation "button" (rectangle, circle, whatever) on the major pages, like our main site, our download page, our wiki, our blog and our AskLibO platform. It should be easy for website admins to be localized, and it should be usuable within and outside of SilverStripe. Only when the space is too limited, we should use a smaller button that maybe opens itself with a mouseover.

In this "button", we should focus on the main donation mechanisms, that is direct credit card payments, and PayPal. Any other mechanisms, may it be Flattr, bank transfer and the like, should - together with a detailed donation page, stating what we do with the money - be within reach of an extra link.

In addition, we should preselect a "sane" value, and offer some convenient choices, plus the option of entering your own value. Recurring donations would be a bonus, but need to be implemented technically first. Plus, we should not ask any more data from people than we need.

Have a look at https://donate.wikipedia.org - the form on the right side, while being a bit large, basically has all the information required.

I am probably the worst designer ever, but anyways, I have attached an idea on how, in my opinion, things should look like, and I'd like to have your opinion on this.

Christian Lohmaier has done a wonderful job of implementing a first functional draft at http://donate.libreoffice.org - while the page itself really needs some polishing up, you get the basic idea.

My drawing (handmade ;-) is available at

and I'd like to hear your opinion. My take is to focus on simplicity, to encourage people to donate, but maybe my approach is wrong.

Thanks,
Florian
