Fairy nuff. You're doubtless more familiar than I am with OpenSolaris administration. > >> I wouldn't want to rule out this option (and IfModule is worse >> than IfDefine), but anything that involves shielding the user >> from httpd.conf needs to be thought through at least to the >> point of where it leaves the user when they first need to >> adjust something "by hand". > > Then neither this method nor a2enmod/a2dismod are going to work :) Agreed, Debian/Ubuntu is the biggest support nightmare, though I tend to suspect that's at least in part because gentoo users are self- selecting geeks. > Is there a better solution that we can develop that doesn't employ > either solution? Not that I'm aware of. On reflection, yours is probably the better solution. How about adding a comment to every IfDefine, pointing to a docs URL for what IfDefine is doing. The docs should then make it clear that the IfDefines are for use with the Sun packaging only, and should be removed if the user wants to step outside it and, for example, use Apache as documented at apache.org. BTW, I should've mentioned my article at http://www.theregister.co.uk/2006/11/04/apache_packages_support_vacuum/ since that flags up the issues much more clearly than I've done in this discussion. -- Nick Kew
