Here is a nice blog post from Marc Guillemot from 2007 where for my opinion
the most points still are valid:

What are considered the key features of Webtest over other popular testing
frameworks? I remember choosing Webtest because of the Ant based engine and
the nice reporting. I was able to script the scripts for my first set of
tests. Ant allowed easy integration into my CI environment (currently using
Hudson). And the reports were easily published and visible.

Hi Michael,

you are right.

I think, if the feedback is big enough and there are enough people willing
to contribute (and I think there already is a trend towards that) we should
first consolidate and renew the build:

1. either maybe entirely use maven (the main build still is ant, but at
least dependencies are fetched using maven, maybe some deployment as well)
or go on to gradle.
The special things in the build are the selftest and the automatic
publishing at webtest.canoo.com ... This probably could easier be addressed
using gradle – but more developers are used to maven. But this then can be
discussed after doing the move.

2. move the automated build from the old Cruise Control to a modern
continuous integration platform (-> we are using Teamcity at Canoo, I think
either we move the build there – or alternatively we also could use Jenkins
or Hudson if this would show advantages)

Canoo surely still would be willing to sponsor the operation of the build
server and the webtest.canoo.com site.

You are right regarding webtest and its connectednesswith htmlunit. But I
think, we can manage this after we have simplified the build. I also have
done a small contribution to htmlunit once before and it wasn’t that hard to
get into it.

Cheers,

Martin

Hi Martin,

+1,

but I did some research in contributing webtest and each time i stuck with
the challenging struckture of the project the connectedness with htmlunit,
other dependencies and even the ancient and complex build.

May be with more initial support I would be able to support.

I’m Developer and do nowadays write most of my test in Groovy – my
webtests-suite (XML-based) is only maintained.

For me the main drawback ist he „out-of-date“ browser-support (including JS)
via htmlunit. Years ago the most webtest supporter were also htmlunit
developer.

Cheers,

Michael

Hi all,

WebTest is OpenSource as you know. If we would move the source code to
GitHub and make it easier for the community to do contributions on their
own – would some of you be able / willing to spend time in contributing?

I also believe it would be very sad to let WebTest die as its core idea and
concept still are very valid and helpful even in actual development
projects.

Could you give some feedback about if you could contribute?

Just send a “+1” to the list, so we see, if it will be worth moving the
project.

Cheers,

Martin

It’s quite the same for me. I’m still using Webtest. I think, it’s a very
good tool. So far I could cover all I wanted with it. Ease of use,
reporting, possibilities to structure the tests and reusing packages, all
that is just fine.

So, I don’t like to see it just fade away like that. Still I’m thinking
about moving over to another tool as there is no activity or progress
anymore.

I happen to like using Webtest and find it truly disappointing that the
product has slipped into the state is has. I wonder if the sponsors would
be willing to donate it or host it elsewhere… or if that would even help.
It is difficult for me to gauge the level of interest or use in the product
via this mailing list. It was once much more active and leads me to believe
that most have moved to another tool. I work with a test team that are not
developers, and the ability to write test scripts using Ant XML is much
easier for them to grasp than writing Java code.

I was able to get a version of Webtest running on htmlunit 2.12. But the
changes in 2.14 and dependencies are a little more daunting and I have not
had the time required to get a good feel for how all of the pieces work
together so that I can make updates.

Hi all,

Webtest uses htmlunit 2.10.
What are the chances that webtest will be updated to use htmlunit 2.14
or we should migrate to other tools for automated testing of web
applications?
