SALMONELLA FOUND AT GA. PLANT AS EARLY AS 2006
Owner Stewart Parnell refused to testify at hearing; 9 have now died
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29138430

See the jar, the congressman challenged Stewart Parnell, holding up a container
of the peanut seller's products and asking if he'd dare eat them. Parnell
pleaded the Fifth.

The owner of the peanut company at the heart of the massive salmonella recall
refused to answer the lawmaker's questions -- or any others -- Wednesday about
the bacteria-tainted products he defiantly told employees to ship to some 50
manufacturers of cookies, crackers and ice cream.

"Turn them loose," Parnell had told his plant manager in an internal e-mail
disclosed at the House hearing. The e-mail referred to products that once were
deemed contaminated but were cleared in a second test last year.

Summoned by congressional subpoena, the owner of Peanut Corp. of America
repeatedly invoked his right not to incriminate himself at the House Energy and
Commerce subcommittee hearing on the salmonella outbreak that has sickened some
600 people, may be linked to nine deaths -- the latest reported in Ohio on
Wednesday -- and resulted in one of the largest product recalls of more than
1,900 items. ...

SESSIONS' CALL FOR GOP 'INSURGENCY' DRAWS FIRE
http://tinyurl.com/d9b5xe

The Republicans are taking a page from the Taliban's book. So says one of their
own leaders.

Dallas Rep. Pete Sessions, the leader of the GOP's House campaign arm, compared
the party to the terrorist-supporting Afghan group in an interview with the
Hotline, a Washington political newsletter. He was trying to describe the
Republicans' strategy for the 2010 midterm elections.

"Insurgency, we understand perhaps a little bit more because of the Taliban,"
Sessions said during the 60-minute sitdown. "And that is that they went about
systematically understanding how to disrupt and change a person's entire
processes."

He continued: "I'm not trying to say the Republican Party is the Taliban. ...
I'm saying an example of how you go about [it] is to change a person from their
messaging to their operations to their frontline message. And we need to
understand that insurgency may be required when the other side, the House
leadership, does not follow the same commands, which we entered the game with."

President Obama - this is true - was getting into his helicopter, he

Dick Cheney Warns Of Alien Attack Under Obama
http://www.crystalair.com/content.php?id=74200902006

Former Vice President Dick Cheney continues to try to put unrational fear into
the hearts of Americans as he now says that there's a "high probability" the
United States will come under alien attack during President Obama's tenure. He
said the aliens would have weapons of mass destruction, "the likes of which we
have never seen."

"Hundreds of thousands of people, perhaps millions of bajillions of people
would have their brains eaten in such an attack," Cheney warned yesterday.
"President Obama's lack of experience with alien attacks makes the U.S.
particularly vulnerable in this case." ...

Concerns over an alien attack have reached into Congress as well, where Senate
Republicans debating Obama's economic stimulus package are fighting for
inclusion of $2.3 billion earmarked for the manufacture of a death ray. Senate
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said the anti-alien measure would create
up to 10,000 jobs while at the same time save millions of lives.

"See, what they don't tell you is that the Democrats are okay with the aliens
coming down and eating the brains of the unemployed blue-collar worker,"
McConnell ranted on the floor of the Senate. "Because by law, a person with no
brains cannot be considered as actively seeking employment and therefore cannot
be considered as part of the unemployed workforce, thereby lowering the
unemployment rate.

"Ladies and gentlemen of the Senate, that is voodoo economics at its finest,"
McConnell added. ...

Leahy Knocks Cheney: "I Don't Need Any Lectures From Him"
http://tinyurl.com/dcgpe4

. . "I just want to say here Bush and Cheney were in charge when the last
attack happened," Leahy said. "They were warned about the last attack before it
happened. On September 10th their proposal was to cut our counter-terrorism
budget substantially. I don't need any lectures from him. They screwed up badly.

"They are also the same people who said the war in Iraq would be over in a
couple weeks, shock and awe and we would find the weapons of mass destruction.
Their policy was to let Osama bin Laden get away when we had him cornered and
send the troops into a useless war in Iraq. No, no, I don't think he has a
great deal of credibility."

British Court Reopens U.S. Torture Case as Obama is Lobbied to Change Course
http://harpers.org/archive/2009/02/hbc-90004388

. . Today the High Court in London agreed to reopen the most recent case,
involving British Guantánamo detainee Binyam Mohamed, making clear that it was
highly dissatisfied with Foreign Secretary David Miliband. Mohamed's lawyers
also issued an appeal directly to President Obama asking him to intervene
directly in the case. The Guardian reports:

US defence officials are preventing Barack Obama from seeing evidence that
a former British resident held in Guantánamo Bay has been tortured, the
prisoner's lawyer said last night, as campaigners and the Foreign Office
prepared for the man's release in as little as a week. Clive Stafford Smith,
the director of the legal charity Reprieve, which represents Ethiopian-born
Binyam Mohamed, sent Obama evidence of what he called "truly mediaeval" abuse
but substantial parts were blanked out so the president could not read it.

In the letter to the president, Stafford Smith urges him to order the
disclosure of the evidence. Stafford Smith tells Obama he should be aware of
the "bizarre reality" of the situation. "You, as commander in chief, are being
denied access to material that would help prove that crimes have been committed
by US personnel. This decision is being made by the very people who you
command."

During the transition period, Obama staffers were regularly denied access to
information relating to the Bush Administration's torture programs. Stafford
Smith notes that a number of Bush Administration officials involved in
administering these programs, although political appointees, subsequently
"burrowed" into career positions where they continue to have on-going
responsibility and appear to be obstructing disclosure of what has happened. ...

SPEAKING WITH THE ENEMY
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/02/08/opinion/08gregg.html

When former Vice President Dick Cheney warned last week that terrorists will be
emboldened by President Barack Obama's decision to close Guantánamo and to ban
harsh interrogation techniques, I was reminded of a story

During wartime service in Vietnam with the C.I.A. from 1970 to 1972, I was in
charge of intelligence operations in the 10 provinces surrounding Saigon. One
of my tasks was to prevent rocket attacks on Saigon's port. ...

The [South Vietnamese] colonel finally relented and turned over a battered
prisoner to me, saying, "This man knows a lot but he will not talk to me." We
treated the prisoner's wounds, reunited him with his family and allowed him to
make his first visit to Saigon. Surprised by the city's affluence, he said he
would tell us anything we asked. The result was a flood of actionable
intelligence that allowed us to disrupt planned operations, including rocket
attacks against Saigon. ...

.. The key to successful interrogation is for the interrogator -- even as he
controls the situation -- to recognize a prisoner's humanity, to understand his
culture, background and language. Torture makes this impossible.

There's a sad twist here. Mr. Cheney forgets that the Bush administration
followed this approach with some success. A high-value prisoner subjected to
patient interrogation by an Arabic-speaking F.B.I. agent yielded highly useful
information, including the final word on Iraq's weapons programs.

His name was Saddam Hussein.

(by Donald P. Gregg, the national security adviser to Vice President George H.
W. Bush from 1982 to 1988...)

"The Magna Carta went on display at the Reagan Library Friday. The document was
signed eight hundred years ago, setting limits on a king's power. It stood as
the foundation of democracy until President Bush signed an executive order
overturning it."
