It's called a captive market. > If a domain name expires, don't expect it to become available > again; instead, it exists in a zombie-like state while the registrar in > question hangs on to the possibility that the "owner" might pay the next > invoice, Well, it does make sense to give the incumbant the right of first refusal for 30-90 days. Although I intentionally let a Network Solutions domain lapse two years ago when I switched to .cx, and my name/address/phone is *still* in the whois database for the old domain. That irritated me. Although, actually, the name does still resolve, haha. I guess I got a free domain I don't want. > all under the pretence that it's "more efficient" to perform "bulk > deletion" of domains (Network Solutions' excuse). I think I heard they're already prosecuting one advance registrar for being bogus. A couple times a month I get spams from companies offering to register in the .biz, .info and .sex domains. What floors me are the offers for the .usa domain. Show your patriotism! .usa is predicted to be even bigger than .com! Reserve your domain now -- before your competitor does! I do wish the alternate top-level domain services (e.g., name.space) would get their act together (http://name-space.com/). They seem to be trying to grab market share from each other rather uniting against ICANN.
