I agree - either virtual or dedicated hosting is the way to go.
I've run it on a virtual BSD and the only issue that I ran into was the fact that the server came with an older version of python, so I had to install python, which really cut into my disk space allotment.

Then also the need to have the AppServer running all the time is
something not every provider allows. The beast cheap solution is to
use a "virtual server" provider based on user mode Linux or
equivalents on BSD. Those offers nowadays are really inexpensive and
start at around 10 Euro a month.

Of course you then would also need to do general system
administration...
