I've added a project to the Webware Sandbox (http://webware-sandbox.sf.net), a refactoring of Webware to separate out WebKit and generally make it easier to install, configure, and administer. It's in Sandbox/ianbicking/WebKit, viewable through the web at:

Wow! That's really good news. I can't promise but 'd try to help because I share your very goals.

The goal of Standalone WebKit is to make Webware installations easier to manage and distribute, and generally make Webware (WebKit) more of an environment and library, and less of an application.

As UNIX taught us, tool should do one thing and do it well.

Personally, I've never used anything except WebKit from Webware distro. Cheetah IMO much better then PSP, SQLObject (thanks Ian!) is better then MiddleKit and the rest kit's just arent needed.

Backward compatibility should be kept, when possible. This shouldn't
be too bad -- mostly stuff that depends on contexts (even trivially)
will break now. Empty strings and other null values need to be
returned for some of the context-related methods. Anything else that
breaks applications too badly needs to be fixed too, though I expect
applications to require at least a little modification before they
work (and causing exceptions in applications is better than causing
silent bugs in those applications).

I woudn't strive for 100%-compatibility. If someone would decide to swtich to StandaloneWK he 'd have a lot of work to do anyway (like convert to new configuration and deployment scheme).
