Ahhh, the distribution discussion. Rarely are there more dangerious, deeper
waters in which to swim.

Having said that, we use FreeBSD for most of our servers and we're happy
with it. I've only recently deployed Webware, though, so I don't have a lot
of information about integration issues other than to say so far we're
happy.

The *BSDs do require some familiarization before you'll be comfortable, but
the ports system is pretty damn cool compared to my previous experiences
with Red Hat and RPM -- *shudder* -- and there are other advantages,
including a helpful community. I highly recommend FreeBSD if you want to
give it a try. I've never looked back ...

... well, until recently. I've installed a Gentoo distribution and I'm
kind've falling for it. Gentoo has a package management system very, very
similar to BSD's, and with all of the desktop-oriented advantages of Linux.
The documentation is excellent and the community seems very available, very
helpful.

So that's my two cents. When it comes to server-operation I really love
*BSD, but Gentoo's growing on me. I've never played with Debian, so I can't
comment there. It seems to me your question really involves issues of using
Python in general, and package management, rather Webware in specific,
discounting any issues like threading problems as you mentioned. With both
Gentoo and BSD the Python package installation is seamless and easy.

Keep us updated if you have any insights!

Subject: [Webware-discuss] Which Linux distribution?

I am using webware on a shared host that's running Red Hat;
it works well for the most part, although I have to restart
the appserver now and then due to a well-known problem with
threads on RH. Also, I can't install things like mod-python.
So I'm considering moving to one of the hosts that offer
user-mode linux (or BSD) virtual private servers(*), and I have
a choice of distributions (one company that looks good,
redwoodvirtual.com, offers a choice between Debian Woody
and Fedora core 1; other companies offer RH, Gentoo, etc.)
Which distribution is best for hosting a site that uses
webware?

(*) Also called Linux Virtual Servers and a few other things.
The big deal here is that you have your own (virtual) dedicated
server with root access, so you can install anything you want.
