You are correct that HIC stands for Health Insurance Claim, however, in the Medicare world it does not refer to a specific claim, it refers to the policyholder's identification number. I'm sure most of you out there are pre-Medicare, however my company administers mostly Medicare supplement plans. If you look at a Medicare ID card, the enrollees ID # is labeled "Medicare Claim Number". If you were to call Medicare for information on a specific claim, you would identify the patient by the HIC # and the claim by the ICN #.
