By definition, the unsolicited 277 by definition is a one way transaction -
Information Source sends information to the Information Receiver. Since
there's no application response needed (though there might be a functional
acknowledgement if you set it up that way), the distinction of real time or
batch in this case isn't relevant except maybe to inform you that you'll be
getting one transaction per interchange rather than many.
And of course one needs to remember that the unsolicited 277 is not
mandated for use under HIPAA so "can" or even "may" is entirely up to the
negotiations between the trading partners.
