Ralph, please see the "Resources" section at http://www.novannet.com/ to
fetch my article, "Is There Still Life Left in That Old EDI?" It
attempts to answer some of your question, though it doesn't so much talk
about the details of XML. But it does examine some of the received
wisdom about XML being the be-all and end-all of e-commerce.

Subject: XML vs. EDI

Can anyone point to a dumbed-down explanation of what XML is and what
distinguishes it from EDI? It's not that I have nothing else to do, but
despite my ignorance of technical matters, I would like to gain a
rudimentary understanding of what this EDI vs.. XML debate is all about.

Of course, this begs the question: If XML is so terrific, why on earth
must they "shove" the X12 transactions into it? Seems to me this is yet
another incarnation of the EDI vs. XML debate. Don't think anyone's been
swayed in either direction in a while... Don't see any new, compelling
arguments for either one... 8-\
