MIAMI (Managed Care Wire) Aetna announced a settlement with providers in the major class action lawsuit that has targeted nine additional MCOs.

Aetna announced May 22 that it was settling with the class of approximately 700,000 physicians who have been suing health plans for a variety of disputes regarding claims payment and medical necessity decisions. The company has vowed to speed payments to providers and to offer providers and patients clearer information regarding its medical and payment decisions. In addition, Aetna will pay $470 million to the plaintiffs.

Medical experts are praising the move, saying that Aetna’s promised changes will lead to less administrative and legal maneuvering between doctors and plans — and will spur other MCOs into similar reforms.

The agreement is subject to the approval of Federal District Judge Federico Moreno, who earlier this year threw out a controversial settlement by Cigna Corp.
