Steve, Thanks for the reply. I wondered why this module didn't make it over to the user group, not ready for prime time yet I guess. I have been using a hobbyboards lightning detector for over a year, it works ok and is stable? Hobbyboards is gone now so I thought this new chip would be an improvement, and supportable. Maybe the speed required to correctly operate is beyond the RPi? I have seen the thread suggesting starting fresh, perhaps I will try that on a new Pi-3. I really don't want to get rid of my working station only to find that it continues to crash. Having the board run with weewx would be great, but if it can be made to work as a stand alone app, that would be fine. I wonder if Matt Wall has a board? Sending him one if he doesn't might help as well. It is summer, maybe interest will pick up when the weather turns bad.
