The need to create the link 'was' the old bug I mentioned.  It was fixed 
quite a number of weeks ago, or so it seemed at the time that is.

I cannot duplicate what you ran into, and everything works as expected with 
no errors seen here.

   - started with a clean deb system
   - installed v4 dpkg via the procedure for that
   - added one extension via wee_extension
   - restarted weewx v4 - the extension works fine with no errors seen
   - upgraded to v5 rc1 per that procedure, taking the default answers when 
   prompted
   - restarted weewx v5 - the extension still works fine with no errors seen
   - and the old user tree under /usr/share/weewx was renamed to be 
   user.yyyymmddhhmmss as expected

You're going to have to precisely document step-by-step exactly how you 
made something break in order for somebody to be able to work the issue if 
you're still having it.
