Did you read the user guide http://weewx.com/docs/usersguide.htm and the running weewx section and the running as a daemon section?
If it did not restart automatically then your son-in-law may well have not done things correctly, so the instructions may not help too much either!! You need your son-in-law to find the time to correct his installation!!
